Indoor and Outdoor Swimming Facilities

In the heart of Gysenbergpark, Herne’s green lung, is the Lago swimming and leisure complex. The extensive "Saunawelt" (sauna world) and "Solewelt" (salt-water world), with a total of 16 saunas and three steam baths, are embedded in a sauna scape that extends over an area of some 10,000 square metres. This spacious open-air area has everything a water enthusiast could ask for. The 100-metre long water chute and wave pool make it a great place to go in winter, too. Lago offers baby swimming courses to get toddlers used to water.

The centrepiece of Wananas is a pirate ship, and the pool is regularly the scene of good-natured water fights between pirates of all ages. There’s wet and wild fun for all when the canons shoot their water streams from the island … The toddlers’ pool with various interactive play features gives the youngest visitors plenty of opportunity to enjoy themselves. Other attractions at Wananas are the water maze, the 50-metre water chute, the 25-metre competition pool, and the multi-purpose pool for swimming courses and training programmes.

Südpool fills a gap in the city’s concept for municipal swimming facilities. Opened in 2001 after just one year of building, Südpool not only provides excellent swimming for the general public, it is also home to school and club swimming groups and also offers therapeutic swimming programmes. This combined indoor and outdoor pool was named by the residents of Herne: The name "Südpool" was selected from a total of 900 suggestions. The indoor 25-metre indoor pool has six lanes and goes from a depth of 90 to 180 centimeters. There are two open-air pools: a 25-meter 4-lane pool for swimmers with a depth of 135 centimeters; and a pool for non-swimmers with a depth between 90 and 135 centimeters. There is also a paddling pool for toddlers.
