A large number of public green spaces, parks and town squares make Herne a very green city. The visitor will find a wide range of recreation facilities, for example Gysenbergpark, which was opened in 1970 as the first of the large parks (Revierparks) in the Ruhr.
Green spaces in the urban area of Herne account for a total 4,782,190 square metres.
In close proximity to the city centre is Herne’s Stadtgarten (public gardens), which forms the beginning of a green corridor that runs eastwards. Green spaces and sports grounds, an attractive café/restaurant, and a large, recently modernized children’s playing area make the Stadtgarten the ideal place for residents of Herne to relax and unwind.
The history of Strünkede castle from one-time seat of knights to a park for everyone can be traced back to the 12
th century. The historical garden was probably designed in the 17
th century. In 1947 Strünkede castle and park came into the possession of the city of Herne, and in the 1950s the castle grounds were re-designed for play, sport, and relaxation.
On August 8, 1900 the "Kaisergarten" (Imperial garden), designed by landscape gardener Fritz Gude, was opened to the public. Today, the Wanner Stadtgarten (public garden in Wanne) is a place to relax very near to the city centre. With the Mondpalast theatre, adult education centre, extensive lake, and children’s playground, the park is a green oasis in a densely populated part of the city.
The parks and gardens department is responsible for maintaining and developing Herne’s public green spaces and parks.
