In the centre of Herne, between the suburbs Herne-Mitte and Eickel, the Hibernia business park has been built on an area of 43 hectares.
Up until the closure of plant II of the former chemical company "Hüls", nitrogen was produced on this site. In the early 1990s the land was purchased out of the "Real Estate Fund Ruhr" by North Rhine-Westphalia at the request of the city of Herne and since then has been developed by the
NRW Regional Development Company in cooperation with the city of Herne. Lots are still available for lease.
The guiding principle for the park’s use is "working in the park", which relates both to economic and ecological aspects. Accordingly, the planning concept envisaged a large share of green spaces and open spaces as well as expanses of water in the form of canals, which substantially increased the recreational value of the new business park.
About 25 hectares of commercial space have been made available to businesses, with lots ranging in size to meet the needs both of small craftsman’s workshops and those of much larger companies. Part of the Last-Mile Logistics park will be offered to firms operating in the logistics sector.
A number of businesses have already become resident in Hibernia business park.
