Landschaftspark Pluto V

Sculpture by Helmut Bettenhausen; official opening of Pluto V landscape park

The Landschaftspark Pluto V (Pluto V Landscape park) is an attractive park within the city boundaries. It is linked to the extensive "Emscher Landscape park" by the "Erzbahntrasse" (iron-ore track). Pluto V landscape park was officially opened on August 20, 2007.

It has a wide range of recreational facilities for walkers and sports enthusiasts, for families with children, for young people and for the more advanced in years.
The area which is now parkland once belonged to Pluto colliery. Before the colliery closed in 1977, parts of the land were used as a landfill site or as commercial premises.
The city of Herne acquired the land and transformed the largest part of the one-time colliery and colliery waste site into a green space covering 14 hectares.

As a reminder of the area’s industrial past and to create a landmark in the park, a concrete plinth from an old industrial installation has been preserved and transformed by Herne artist Helmut Bettenhausen into a sculpture.
