At present some 20,000 migrants from 120 different countries live in Herne; they account for about 12 per cent of the overall population. If we add to these the people who have been naturalised in recent years or who have come to Herne as ethnic German repatriates (Spätaussiedler), then the share of residents with a migration background rises to an estimated 20 per cent. One of the city’s main tasks in the future, therefore, will be to secure the integration of these newcomers.
