The Project "jetzt Wanne!" ("Now Wanne!")

"jetzt Wanne!" is the slogan of the city of Herne’s initiative to make the town centre of Wanne "fit for the future".

"jetzt Wanne!" is one of several projects that make up the programme "Urban renewal west".

Securing the future of the town centre

With funds from the federal and state governments and the city of Herne as well as with the support of a private initiative, the long-term future of the town centre of Wanne is to be secured.

Specifically, it will mean adapting to new patterns of shopping behaviour, catering for the higher standards of homeseekers, and adapting to changes in the economic and demographic structure.

The preconditions for viable future development in Wanne-Mitte are in place: The area is centrally located and is easily reached by car, bus and rail. The town centre has a pedestrian precinct with many retail outlets and a range of public amenities such as schools, Kindergarten, and Sankt Anna Hospital. In other words, Wanne-Mitte has all the facilities that make it an attractive place in which to shop, work and live.

What changes are to be made?

Development of town centre by strengthening retail trade:
Changes here will involve shortening and improving the pedestrian precinct, making the central square more attractive, and improving city marketing.

Making Wanne-Mitte a residential location with a future:
Changes here will involve renovating facades and revamping courtyards, improving roads, adapting apartment layout and fittings to present-day standards.

"jetzt Wanne!" is a longer-term project. It will be implemented over a period of at least eight years and not be completed before 2014. The application for federal and state funds was submitted in 2006. Funds are granted on condition that the city of Herne contributes 20%, private investors share in the cost of renovating existing buildings, and financing of the overall project is carried in part by private individuals.
