Discover nature in and around Herne on horseback. In the north west of Wanne you’ll find bridle paths in Resse woods. And in the southern suburbs the network of horse trails extends from Holthausen and Gysenberg to the area of fields and woodland known as Herner Mark.
Horseriding is permitted on designated bridle paths in rural and wooded areas and on all public roads.
It is not permitted on roads and pathways that provide access to gardens and parks, commercial or residential sites or on private walking trails, nature trails, cycle trails and the like. Exceptions are embankments, forest firebreaks, logging roads, wildlife tracks, and paths. Cross-country riding is likewise prohibited.
An owner’s licence is mandatory
When riding in the open country or in woodland a valid licence must be clearly displayed on both sides of the horse’s bridle. The licence must be renewed annually, the sticker or disc having a different colour each year.
The licence fee is 38 Euros. The annual cost of renewal is 30.50 Euros.
The fee and renewal charge includes a contribution of 25 Euros towards the provision and maintenance of horse trails.
When you receive your licence, you will be given a detailed map of bridle paths in the city of Herne plus information about equestrian centres and car parking.

Licences can be purchased in the municipal citizens advice offices (Bürgerlokale) in Wanne (Am Buschmannshof) and Herne-Mitte (Bonifatiuskirche) as well as in the Fachbereich Umwelt (environment department).
The latter is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30 to 12
a.m. and from 1.30 to 3.30
